WHO IS ABDULLAH GÜL?

Turkey's 11th President Abdullah Gül was born on October 29, 1950, in Kayseri. Graduating from the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University, Gül worked as an economist for a while at the Islamic Development Bank in Saudi Arabia after his academic career.

Gül stepped into political life by being elected as a member of parliament from the Welfare Party in 1991, and after the closure of the Virtue Party, he became a founding member of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in 2001. Gül briefly held the position of Prime Minister in 2002 and served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister from 2003 to 2007.

In 2007, Abdullah Gül was elected President by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and held this position until 2014. During his term, he stood out particularly with his involvement in the European Union process, democratization reforms, and foreign policy contacts.

After leaving the presidency in 2014, Gül largely withdrew from active politics but continued to make headlines with his public statements and evaluations.
