The "crocodile-surrounded security" approach that Donald Trump brought up for immigrants in the United States has now transformed into a prison plan in Israel. The proposal by Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to establish a facility surrounded by crocodiles for Palestinian prisoners has reignited discussions on human rights.
In the U.S., while Donald Trump's "security measures surrounded by crocodiles" for immigrants sparked controversy, a similar approach has now emerged from Israel. Israel's far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir proposed the establishment of a prison facility surrounded by crocodiles for Palestinian prisoners.
According to a report by Channel 13 television in Israel, officials from the Israel Prison Service have begun to examine Ben-Gvir's unusual proposal. According to the plan, Palestinian detainees defined as "security prisoners" will be held in an area surrounded by crocodiles to make escape impossible.
TRUMP'S IMMIGRANT PRISON COMES TO MIND
This proposal brings to mind the crocodile facilities established by Trump for immigrants. The U.S. President had stated that similar facilities, resembling the detention center built in the Everglades natural wildlife area in Florida for irregular migrants, would also be opened in Republican states, particularly Louisiana and Alabama.
This approach, criticized as "inhumane," has now turned into a concrete prison plan in Israel.
LOCATION CHOSEN NEAR THE GOLAN
The report indicated that Ben-Gvir presented this proposal during a review meeting with Israel Prison Service Director Kobi Yaakobi last week. It was noted that the location considered for the facility is near the Hamat Gader area in northern Israel.
THERE IS A CROCODILE FARM IN THE AREA
The area is located near the occupied Golan Heights and the Jordan border and currently hosts a crocodile farm and a zoo.
HE HAD ALSO CALLED FOR THE DEATH PENALTY
Ben-Gvir had previously suggested the introduction of the death penalty for Palestinian detainees. The second and third readings of the bill, which passed the first vote in the Israeli Parliament, are expected to take place in the coming days.
HEAVY TOLL IN PRISONS
According to a report published by Israel's Walla news site at the beginning of December, since Ben-Gvir took office at the end of 2022, 110 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons. Institutions dealing with Palestinian prisoners have stated that more than 9,300 Palestinians, including women and children, are held in Israeli prisons.
