A dispute between registered taxi drivers at Istanbul Airport and taxi drivers coming from the city over picking up passengers escalated into a fight. In the incident, 2 people were injured, while more than 100 taxi drivers protested the events.
In a fight that broke out between taxi drivers registered at Istanbul Airport and those coming from the city due to the issue of picking up passengers, 2 people were injured.
According to reports, a taxi driver bringing passengers from the city wanted to pick up a passenger from the airport. Unable to find a passenger, the taxi driver began to circle the airport a second time in search of a customer.
DISPUTE OVER PASSENGER PICKUP TURNED INTO A FIGHT
Meanwhile, taxi drivers waiting for passengers at the airport warned their colleagues coming from outside, which led to a dispute between the parties. The argument quickly escalated into a fight. While 2 people were injured in the fight, police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene upon notification. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals by ambulance.
TAXI DRIVERS PROTESTED
On the other hand, it was claimed that a taxi driver who came to drop off his daughter at the airport's metro station was also attacked by other taxi drivers at the stop. Following the incident, more than 100 taxi drivers from the city came to the airport to protest what had happened. While police teams took security measures in the area, an investigation was launched regarding the incident.
"UNTIL TODAY WE WERE GETTING FINED, FROM NOW ON WE WILL START GETTING BEATEN"
Taxi driver İlkay Acar stated, "We cannot pick up passengers from the airport. Not only can we not pick up passengers, but until today we were getting fined, and from now on we will start getting beaten. Just two days ago, an incident occurred in this country. A father was beaten in front of his child. Today the same thing happened to our taxi driver brother. A man living in Arnavutköy brings his child to the metro at Istanbul Airport.
He is going to drop off his child and gets beaten by the airport taxis. The staff working at the airport constantly behave with bad intentions towards taxi drivers. Airport taxis make agreements with hotels in the city center and bring passengers to the airport at half price. Yellow taxis should not pick up passengers inside, they should come to the airport and not pick up passengers. They should be fined for the slightest thing. Here, you can see at least 150 - 200 of my colleagues today. Each of them has at least been fined once. When we come to the airport, we want to pick up our passengers from here," he said.
