It has been claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested the United States to intervene in the situation due to Egypt's increased military presence in the Sinai Peninsula. According to reports in the U.S. press, Tel Aviv is quite concerned about Cairo's actions in Sinai.
The US press claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested the Trump administration to exert pressure on Egypt.
"ISRAEL REQUESTED THE US TO PRESSURE EGYPT" CLAIM The US-based news site Axios reported, citing one US and two Israeli officials, that Netanyahu made this request by alleging that Egypt has increased its military presence in the Sinai Peninsula. The officials claimed that Egypt has been building military infrastructure suitable for offensive use in an area where only light weapons were allowed to be deployed under the peace agreement signed with Israel in 1979.
Officials also claimed that the runways at the air bases in Egypt's Sinai region have been expanded and that underground facilities that could be used for missile storage have been constructed in the area. However, it was reported that it has not been confirmed whether Egypt is storing missiles in these facilities.
"WE ARE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT THE EGYPTIANS ARE DOING IN SINAI" Israeli officials stated that communication has been established with Egypt through diplomatic and military channels, but Egypt has not provided an explanation regarding the purpose of the construction. One official stated that after direct talks with Egypt yielded no results, Israel requested the Trump administration to intervene in the situation. Another official argued that the US-led multinational observation force has significantly reduced its air patrols over Sinai, worsening the situation and making it more difficult to monitor developments on the ground. The Israeli official said, "What the Egyptians are doing in Sinai is quite serious, and we are very concerned about this situation."
EGYPTIAN OFFICIAL DENIED THE CLAIMS An Egyptian official denied the claims, stating that the US has not raised these issues with Egypt recently.
Sinai Peninsula "NETANYAHU IS ENDANGERING THE PEACE AGREEMENT WITH EGYPT" Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, in a statement following the attack carried out by Israel on September 9 in Doha, Qatar, directly addressed the Israeli people. The Egyptian President stated that the Netanyahu government is endangering the peace agreement with Egypt and making it impossible to normalize relations further with other countries in the region.
THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN ISRAEL AND EGYPT Under the peace agreement signed between Israel and Egypt in 1979, the countries agreed to end the state of war that has been in effect since the Arab-Israeli War began in 1948, for Israel to withdraw its military and civilian presence from the Sinai Peninsula, which it occupied in 1967, and to mutually recognize each other. The US had assumed the guarantee of this agreement.
