New-period premiums have been announced for compulsory traffic insurance, which vehicle owners must have renewed every year. The Insurance Information and Monitoring Center (SBM) has published the compulsory traffic insurance tariff that will be valid in November 2026. With the new tariff, premiums increased by 1 percent, while the difference between the amounts drivers will pay according to their risk tiers and vehicle types drew attention. In some vehicle groups, insurance costs exceed 450 thousand lira, while drivers who do not renew their policies face a fine and a traffic ban.
CAR INSURANCE IN ISTANBUL EXCEEDED 59 THOUSAND LIRA
According to NTV's report, under the November tariff, the compulsory traffic insurance premium for a car driver at the fourth tier in Istanbul was 19,893 lira. The amount to be paid by drivers at the zeroth tier, which represents the highest risk group, rose to 59,678 lira.
For drivers at the eighth tier, who are in the lowest risk group due to their no-claims history, the premium was set at 9,946 lira. Thus, in Istanbul, the premium difference between drivers in the highest and lowest risk groups reached approximately 500 percent.
PREMIUMS ALSO ROSE IN ANKARA AND IZMIR
In the capital Ankara, the compulsory traffic insurance premium for high-risk car drivers at the zeroth tier rose to 57,989 lira. The amount to be paid by eighth-tier drivers in the lowest risk group was 9,665 lira.
A similar picture emerged in Izmir. In the city, zeroth-tier car insurance rose to 56,300 lira, while the premium for drivers at the eighth tier was announced as 9,383 lira.
INSURANCE COST FOR COMMERCIAL TAXIS EXCEEDED 183 THOUSAND LIRA
The premiums set for commercial taxis in the new tariff also reached significant amounts. In Istanbul, the compulsory traffic insurance premium for a commercial taxi at the zeroth tier was 183,837 lira, while at the eighth tier this amount was calculated as 30,640 lira.
In Ankara, the highest premium for commercial taxis was 178,634 lira, and the lowest premium was 29,772 lira. In Izmir, the zeroth-tier premium reached 173,431 lira, and the eighth-tier premium reached 28,905 lira.
BUS PREMIUM ROSE TO 451,644 LIRA
One of the most striking figures in the November tariff was seen for passenger buses. In Istanbul, the compulsory traffic insurance premium at the zeroth tier for a bus with a seating capacity of 31 or more rose to 451,644 lira.
For operators at the eighth tier in the same vehicle group, the premium was set at 75,274 lira. Thus, the insurance cost for high-risk buses exceeded the 450 thousand lira threshold.
FINES AND TRAFFIC BANS FOR UNINSURED VEHICLES
Drivers who take to traffic without compulsory traffic insurance face not only high premiums but also legal sanctions. According to the 2026 information cited in the report, the fine for driving an uninsured vehicle is stated as 1,246 lira. In addition, the vehicle may be banned from traffic until the insurance deficiency is remedied.
During inspections, traffic teams may give drivers without insurance the opportunity to have their policies issued. However, this practice does not eliminate the obligation to obtain insurance or the sanctions that may be applied.
If an uninsured vehicle is involved in an accident, the driver may have to compensate the damage caused to the other party through their own means. The source text also states a fine amount of 2,039 lira for this situation.
5 PERCENT ADDITIONAL COST EVERY MONTH FOR THOSE WHO DELAY INSURANCE
There is also an additional premium practice due to delay for vehicle owners who do not renew their compulsory traffic insurance within the deadline. If the policy is not obtained or renewed on time, a 5 percent surcharge is applied for each 30-day period of delay.
The total premium increase due to delay can reach up to 50 percent. Therefore, it is important for vehicle owners to track their policy expiration dates so that they do not face possible sanctions or additional insurance costs.
