HEAVY RAINS CAUSED LANDSLIDE
A landslide occurred at a garbage disposal site following heavy rains that affected Conakry, the capital of the West African country of Guinea. In a statement from the Guinean government, it was reported that 30 people lost their lives and 22 people were injured, including 6 seriously and 16 lightly, in the incident that occurred around 02:00 local time. While it was stated that the incident occurred in the Gbessia district of Conakry, it was reported that search and rescue efforts were continuing in the area. Eyewitnesses stated that the collapsed massive pile of garbage was large enough to bury an apartment building and surrounding smaller structures.
THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL SITE WAS PLANNED TO BE CLOSED
In a statement made last Thursday, Guinea's Minister of Regional Administration, Djenab Toure, announced that the government would close the aforementioned garbage disposal site due to the danger it posed, especially during the ongoing rainy season. Toure stated that the garbage would be transported to another area outside Conakry.
