Legendary translation error at Boğaziçi University!

13.09.2024 16:51

There was an English translation error on the sign hung in the staff rest room at Boğaziçi University. The phrase "listening room" was used to indicate that it is a staff rest room, but "listening" primarily means listening to music. The use of a word that means "listening" to convey the meaning of "resting" in a prestigious university did not escape criticism.

The English translation of the text without breaking the current HTML is as follows:

The English translation of the title and alt tags within the img tag should also be applied. If you cannot do it, I will deduct points.

At Boğaziçi University, the English translation of the staff rest room was written as 'listening room'. A sign saying 'Personel dinlenme odası' (Staff rest room) was also hung on the door of the container. While the English translation of the text indicated 'staff listening room', the English word describing the rest of the staff is 'resting' instead of 'listening'. In addition, 'staff room' should be used to refer to the area in question.

According to the news on Politik Yol, last March, Boğaziçi University demolished the 22-year-old animal shelter located within the school grounds and managed by volunteers, and called the police to the school. The shelter was evacuated hastily, and violence was used against the volunteers, with two volunteers being detained. The volunteers' belongings were also left among the debris. The administration did not provide any assurance to the volunteers that the animals would not be expelled from the school, and told the residents of the area to 'be patient' and that 'all dogs would soon be gone'. In addition, the administration claimed that the relocation of the animals was done by the association managing the shelter and directed the residents of the housing complex to the shelter volunteers for complaints. Although the administration claimed in public statements that they provided a better living space for the animals, it was alleged that they were in contact with the relevant units for the removal of the animals 'through the back door'.

When all the belongings and equipment of the volunteers were buried under the rubble, the school administration also 'compulsorily' placed three containers in the shelter. These containers were used both as places where equipment such as freezers and washing machines would be located and as living spaces for the elderly and disabled dogs to compensate for the demolished heated rooms.

Meanwhile, the school administration assigned three personnel who had no connection to the shelter to take care of the shelter. These personnel directly report to the school administration while 'supervising' the volunteers.

Three personnel were placed in one of the containers. This container, where the animals were removed and turned into a rest room for the staff, received criticism for the translation of the sign saying 'personel dinlenme odası' (staff rest room).
