The indictment prepared by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the defendant, who is alleged to have sexually assaulted refugee women in need of assistance, has been accepted by the Ankara 62nd Criminal Court of First Instance.
OFFERED HELP IN EXCHANGE FOR SEXUAL RELATIONS
The indictment states that the defendant, Sadettin K, established a business called Umut Hayır Mağazası in 2014, through which he provided basic products such as food, clothing, coal, and stationery to those in need, and that the complainants went to the business to receive food aid.
The complainants F.M. and S.H.M, whose statements are included in the indictment, reported that they came to Ankara from Syria years ago and that when they went to Umut Hayır Mağazası to receive food aid, the defendant sexually assaulted them. The indictment notes that the defendant offered both complainants, "I will give you money, be with me," and that the complainants, due to their need for assistance, went to the store many times over 5-6 years, each time being sexually assaulted.
"HE CHOSE THE WOMEN HE WOULD HELP"
The witness U.H, whose testimony is included in the indictment, stated that he came to Turkey from Syria 12 years ago and that, since his wife is visually impaired, he went to the place where the defendant distributed aid with other women from his neighborhood. U.H mentioned that the defendant chose the women he would help, and that he saw the defendant hugging the women tightly from behind on one occasion, and that he stopped receiving aid and left the association out of fear, while the women in financial difficulty could not speak out against the defendant's behavior.
UP TO 35 YEARS IN PRISON SOUGHT
The defendant, in his statement, claimed that after retiring, he started to engage in charitable work, and after a while, he distributed donations made by well-off citizens to refugees from the warehouse he operated under the name "Umut Hayır Mağazası," denying that he sexually assaulted the complainants and rejecting the accusations against him.
When the entire file is evaluated together, the indictment states that it has been understood that the defendant committed the crime of sexual assault in a repeated manner by acting against the complainants, and that he is sought to be sentenced to up to 35 years in prison for the repeated crime of "simple sexual assault." The indictment has been accepted by the Ankara 62nd Criminal Court of First Instance.
