Middle school student Çağla Savaş, who was taken into surgery with a preliminary diagnosis of meningitis in Zonguldak and was fighting for her life while intubated, lost her life in the intensive care unit where she had been receiving treatment for a week. While concerns about an outbreak increased in the city following the meningitis claim, the governorship announced that there was no second case.

Sad news came from 14-year-old middle school student Çağla Savaş, who was hospitalized in Zonguldak with suspected meningitis.

SENT HOME AFTER BEING GIVEN MEDICATION MULTIPLE TIMES

Çağla Savaş, an 8th-grade student attending Gazi Mustafa Kemal Middle School in the city center, was taken to the emergency service of Zonguldak Women's Maternity and Children's Diseases Hospital on April 4 with complaints such as fever and headache. According to the claim; after a blood test performed here, Savaş was given serum and antibiotic treatment and discharged. The next day, seeing their child's condition had worsened, her family brought Çağla back to the same hospital's emergency service, and she was discharged after similar treatment. Her family had Çağla Savaş, whose headaches increased and neck stiffness developed, examined by a specialist doctor on April 6. Savaş was given antibiotic treatment and sent home. The next day, Çağla Savaş, whose condition worsened further, was taken again to the emergency service of the same hospital and was told that her treatment needed to continue.

UNDERWENT SURGERY

Savaş, who was taken to Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University Hospital on April 8 with complaints such as loss of consciousness, severe headache, and fever, was hospitalized here with a preliminary diagnosis of meningitis. Çağla Savaş underwent brain surgery on April 10 to reduce the pressure in her head and was intubated.

Savaş, whose treatment had been ongoing in the pediatric intensive care unit for a week, lost her life in the morning hours. While her family is experiencing great sorrow, it was learned that Çağla Savaş will be laid to rest tomorrow.

CITY WENT ON ALERT, GOVERNORSHIP MADE A STATEMENT

As concerns about an outbreak increased in the city following the meningitis claim, a written statement was also made by the Zonguldak Governor's Office regarding the issue. The statement said, "The mentioned situation was recorded as a suspected case within the scope of the Provincial Health Directorate's mandatory notifiable diseases system; upon the notification made by the school administration to our Provincial National Education Directorate, necessary coordination was ensured between the Provincial National Education Directorate and the Provincial Health Directorate. Accordingly, on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 09:00, necessary investigation and information activities were carried out at the school by Public Health teams. Within the scope of the work carried out; protective treatment was initiated for close contact students, teachers, school cafeteria staff, and family members, and necessary information was also provided to families. The news reports in the press regarding suspected meningitis are being followed with sensitivity, and currently, no second suspected meningitis case has been detected. All health units, primarily the Women's Maternity and Children's Hospital and Bülent Ecevit University Hospital Pediatric Emergency Services, are following the issue with sensitivity under the coordination of our Governorship."
