French President Emmanuel Macron described the tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump for European Union countries as "ruthless and baseless," stating, "Americans will be weaker and poorer than they were yesterday."
French President Emmanuel Macron met with French industry representatives following U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement of tariffs on the European Union (EU) yesterday.
"AMERICANS WILL BE WEAKER AND POORER THAN YESTERDAY"
Macron described Trump's tariffs as "ruthless and baseless," stating that this step is a "shock to international trade." He noted that the tariffs would have a "massive impact" on the European economy, saying, "One thing is certain, with the decision made last night, the U.S. economy and Americans will be weaker and poorer than yesterday."
"WE WILL PROTECT OUR RIGHTS"
Emphasizing that Europe must respond to these tariffs "sector by sector," Macron stated that the response to the U.S.'s "reciprocal tariffs" would be much more "massive" than previous retaliations against U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs. Macron said, "These steps test the unity and economic resilience of Europe. But we are prepared. We will protect our rights in an organized manner on a sectoral basis."
TRUMP'S 20% TARIFF ON THE EUROPEAN UNION
Under the new tariffs announced by President Trump yesterday, the highest tariff rate will be 34% for China and 46% for Vietnam. A 20% tariff will be imposed on the EU, while Turkey will be among the countries subject to a 10% tariff.
