CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır announced that the regulation regarding women's surnames in the 9th Judicial Package on the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) has been removed from the proposal text. The discussions of the Bill on Amending Certain Laws, known to the public as the "9th Judicial Package," which includes regulations that prevent women from using only their own surnames, are ongoing in the TBMM General Assembly. Finally, CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır stated that the controversial article in question has been removed from the text. CHP's Başarır said: "The discussions on the 9th Judicial Package are continuing in the TBMM. The most controversial and unacceptable article is 'the woman's surname.' For two days, the CHP has been showing resistance. A woman can use the surname she wants. She can use her own surname, use a joint surname with her spouse, or use her spouse's surname. It is at the discretion of the woman. It is not within the authority of the AK Party government or its group to intervene in this. As a result of the struggle of the entire group, this article has been removed from the proposal today. I would like to thank my group, my fellow deputies, the female deputies, women's organizations, associations, and the millions of Turkish women who opposed this article."
