In a school shooting organized by a student at a high school in Thailand's Nonthaburi province, 5 teachers lost their lives and 22 people were injured. It was determined that the attacker also killed his grandfather and grandmother, with whom he lived, before going to school, and the total death toll linked to the incident rose to 8 after the student was found dead at the school.
Debsirin Nonthaburi High School, located in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, northwest of Thailand's capital Bangkok, was the scene of an armed attack in the morning hours.
A student who came to the high school, where more than 3,000 students are educated, opened fire with a weapon he had brought with him. Thai authorities announced that 5 teachers lost their lives in the attack and 22 people were injured.
It was reported that 9 of the injured were in serious condition, and some of the injured were receiving treatment in intensive care.
HE OPENED FIRE RANDOMLY IN THE CORRIDORS
Thai Police announced that the attacker brought the weapon into the building inside his school bag. Witnessing students recounted that the attacker opened fire randomly in the school corridors and walked around for a while holding the gun.
Authorities evacuated the school in a controlled manner after the attack. Special operations teams that later entered the building found the attacker dead at the scene.
During their examination of the attacker's bag, police teams seized a large amount of ammunition.
HE KILLED HIS GRANDPARENTS BEFORE GOING TO SCHOOL
In the later stages of the investigation, the lifeless bodies of two people were also found in the attacker's home. Examinations determined that the attacker's grandparents, with whom he lived, had been shot and killed.
According to the initial determinations of authorities, the student killed his grandparents before going to school. He then took the handgun, which was stated to belong to his grandfather, and went to school where he carried out the attack.
With the determination that the two deaths at the house were also connected to the attacker, the total loss of life connected to the incident, including the attacker, rose to 8.
THE REASON FOR THE ATTACK IS BEING INVESTIGATED
Thai Police announced that it has not yet been determined why the attacker carried out such an act. Police seized the ammunition from the attacker's bag and other evidence.
Teams have launched a comprehensive investigation to shed light on all aspects of the armed attack at the school and the double murder committed at the attacker's home.
STATEMENT FROM PRIME MINISTER ANUTIN CHARNVIRAKUL
In his statement following the attack, Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that he was deeply saddened by what happened. Charnvirakul instructed relevant institutions to intervene with the injured as quickly as possible.
Offering his condolences to the relatives of those who lost their lives, Charnvirakul said that the tragedy once again highlighted the importance of the government's stricter policies on the carrying and possession of firearms.
Stating that the necessary teams have been dispatched to the scene, Charnvirakul expressed that the investigation continues in all its aspects.
