Dries Mertens, whom Galatasaray wants to include in Okan Buruk's staff, has indicated that he wishes to take on the role of team manager rather than assistant coach in the yellow-red team.

Belgian star Dries Mertens, who ended his active football career wearing the Galatasaray jersey, has made a decision about his future at the yellow-red club. The experienced player turned down head coach Okan Buruk's offer to join the coaching staff and requested a different role within the club.

''I HAVE NO PLANS TO COACH''

During the championship celebrations held in Belgium, Mertens met with Galatasaray President Dursun Özbek and evaluated the assistant coaching offer made by Okan Buruk. After also having a video call with Buruk, Mertens stated that he is not keen on coaching, saying, "Thank you very much for the offer, but I currently have no plans to become a coach. To be honest, my retirement life is going quite well (laughing). However, if our management deems it appropriate, I would be happy to consider taking on a role as sporting director or team manager at Galatasaray."

HIS NEW ROLE COULD BE MANAGER

The Belgian footballer's desire to work in an administrative capacity rather than on the sidelines was also positively received by the yellow-red management. The club is expected to appoint the experienced player, who has become a fan favorite, to an administrative role similar to team manager in order to benefit from his experience and extensive network in European football.
