Representing our country in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, national boxer Esra Yıldız Kahraman competed in the 57 kg semi-final match against Taiwanese Lin Yu Ting. Losing 5-0 to the Taiwanese athlete, the national boxer lost the chance to advance to the finals and won the bronze medal.
PROTESTED WITH "XX"
Esra Yıldız Kahraman made an "XX" sign after losing to boxer Lin Yu Ting, who was allegedly found to have XY chromosomes in the DNA tests conducted in 2023 and was banned from the World Championships.
In a letter sent by the International Boxing Association (IBA) to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the banned Yu Ting, it was stated that "as a result of the testosterone tests conducted, it is certain that Lin Yu-Ting and Imane Khelif did not meet the necessary eligibility tests and had a definite advantage over other female competitors."
"I WON'T GIVE UP"
Emphasizing that she did everything she could, Esra said, "Yesterday, I had some unfortunate events and got sick. I won the bronze medal here. Let's say 'it was meant to be', I am aiming for the gold medal in Los Angeles 2028. And I won't give up until I get it." Esra stated that she felt the support of the Turkish people before the matches and thanked everyone who reached out to her, whether they knew her or not, verbally or in writing, and prayed for her.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Thus, human body cells have 46 chromosomes consisting of 23 pairs. 22 of them are the same in males and females and are called autosomal chromosomes. The remaining pair forms the sex chromosomes. In females, there is a normal chromosomal structure of 46,XX, and in males, there is a normal chromosomal structure of 46,XY.
Kahraman indicated with the X sign the athletes with XY chromosomes who compete in the women's category.

Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak watched the match in the arena. In his post after the match, Minister Osman Aşkın Bak shared a photo of Kahraman making the "X" sign and used the expression "Esra Yıldız Kahraman, Olympic Third Place! You fought wonderfully, Esra, we are proud of you!"
