Ömer Özgür Tort, the Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Migros, stated that Turkey is going through a serious risk period in terms of food access and production. He pointed out that producers are unwilling to produce because they cannot make a profit, emphasizing that this has become a significant threat for both the sector and the country. He warned, "If we continue at this pace, we may not find products to sell in Turkey."
Migros Executive Board Chairman and CEO Ömer Özgür Tort highlighted the deepening production problems in the food and textile sectors at the 26th Business World Summit organized by the Turkish Confederation of Business Associations (TÜRKONFED) in Antalya.
"PRODUCERS DO NOT WANT TO PRODUCE BECAUSE THEY CANNOT MAKE MONEY"
Stating that Turkey is going through a serious risk period in terms of access to food and production, Tort emphasized that producers do not want to produce because they cannot make money, and this has become a significant threat for both the sector and the country.
SHARED A DISTURBING SCENARIO
According to a report by Yener Karadeniz from Ekonomim, Migros Executive Board Chairman Tort said, "If we continue at this pace, we may not find products to sell in Turkey. Then we may have to include food in this wave of imports, which is a concern for us."
"WE SPEND 350-400 THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR ON PESTICIDE CONTROL"
Touching on food safety, Tort stated, "I visit some orchards, and they indicate that a part of it is reserved for themselves and that they do not use pesticides there. This really pains me. They tell me this; who knows what else is not being said. The control of this starts with our conscience. We see it as our responsibility to control. We spend 350-400 thousand dollars a year just on pesticide control.
The assessment and auditing of this is a matter of conscience. If we do all this, we also promise to make our supplies transparent. I promise to put a QR code on all products. It is most valuable for everyone to be a stakeholder in this responsibility," he said.
