A 16-year-old boy was attacked by a shark at Cabarita Beach in New South Wales, Australia. The moment of the incident and what happened afterward was recorded by a mobile phone camera.
In the incident that occurred on Sunday, the young boy was attacked by a shark while in the water. His right arm, wrist, and leg were seriously injured. Bystanders immediately rushed to help, but the shark was still swimming in the water.
In those moments, a brave person entered the water and punched the shark to rescue the boy. Other beachgoers panicked and moved away from the shore, while the rescue footage created a significant stir on social media.
A surfboard was used as a stretcher to bring the boy to the shore. The injured boy was then taken to the parking lot, where two off-duty paramedics applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
The boy was quickly airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital. His condition was reported to be serious but stable.
Speaking after the incident, paramedic Ben Mumford said, "A few brave people there really did a great job. The two paramedics provided first aid and bought time until we arrived."
An aerial search was initiated to find the shark, but no results were obtained. The species of the shark that attacked has not yet been determined. However, officials announced that they had fitted a tracking device to a tiger shark three days prior at the same beach.
Beach authorities announced that Cabarita Beach would remain closed to the public until a second warning.
