OLDER 'STAR DUST' THAN THE SUN DETECTED

In samples from the Bennu asteroid, collected from a point more than 200 million miles away from Earth, 'star dust' that is recorded as 'chemically primitive' and formed around stars that have completed their life cycle billions of years ago, older than the Sun, has been detected.

SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE PRE-SUN FORMATION EPOCH

Researchers reported that these samples shed light on the epoch before the formation of the Sun. Prof. Sara Russell, a planetary scientist from the Natural History Museum in London, stated, "We are seeing a unique snapshot of the outer solar system during the time our Sun was born. Some of these grains have remained almost unchanged for billions of years and tell us about the environment in which the planets were born."

"PROBABLY FORMED BEYOND SATURN'S ORBIT"

Prof. Jessica Barnes from the University of Arizona, in her assessment of the research, stated, "Our data shows that Bennu's parent asteroid likely formed in the outer regions of the solar system, probably beyond Saturn's orbit."
