During an activity at a kindergarten in Antalya, the teachers sent 4-year-old Mavi's classmate to the main building when Mavi wanted to go to the bathroom. While returning to the activity area, Mavi, one of the small children, tried to open an iron door that had no staff present. Her thumb got caught in the door. While the child's severed finger was being surgically reattached, the family filed a complaint against those responsible.
On October 2nd, around 10:30 AM, a horrifying incident occurred at a kindergarten located in the Muratpaşa district of Antalya. According to reports, 4-year-old Mavi İmer told her teacher that she needed to go to the bathroom during an activity in the schoolyard. The teacher directed Mavi İmer to the main building with a classmate.
THE CHILD'S FINGER GOT PINCHED AND SEVERED IN THE IRON DOOR Upon entering the main building through the iron door opened by the staff, Mavi İmer and her friend attempted to open the door themselves on their way back, which was unattended by any personnel. At that moment, Mavi İmer's right thumb got caught in the suddenly closing door. Due to the weight of the iron door, the child's finger was severed at the first joint. Following the screams of the girl, teachers who came to the scene alerted the health team to the kindergarten. Mavi İmer was taken to a private hospital by ambulance, and her condition was reported to her mother Dicle Taktak and father Seçkin İmer. At the hospital, Mavi İmer was diagnosed with 'traumatic amputation,' and her finger was reattached through microsurgery. After a period of treatment in the hospital, Mavi İmer was discharged.
"THERE IS A METAL PIECE INSIDE" Seçkin İmer, reacting to the situation, stated, "Our child underwent microsurgery. Of course, right now, we have a metal piece inside. We cannot say anything until it is removed. The treatment process is expected to last up to a year. We are very anxious because it is the finger that holds the pencil in her right hand. We think she may experience a lot regarding her school life and education."
"THE TEACHER GAVE HER A FRIEND INSTEAD OF ACCOMPANYING HER" Emphasizing that the school administration did not explain anything to them after the incident, İmer said, "While our child was in the garden during the school event, she felt the need to go to the bathroom and shared this with her teacher. Instead of accompanying her, the teacher sent her to the main building with another child of the same age. Since it was a long distance, she could not maintain eye contact. We actually have reception staff at our school. I guess they were either not there or had another workload. We have no idea about this. Because the school has not explained anything to us. There is an approach like 'It's a child, it's an accident, these things can happen. It shouldn't be exaggerated.' We say that while the assistant teacher collects fees and dues; we want this child not to be put at risk alone in the school, crossing iron doors and climbing stairs. The school administration should be saying, 'We have started to take precautions. We have shortcomings. We will solve this as soon as possible,' but they are not providing any support, help, or requests regarding this matter," he said.
"WE ARE FILING A COMPLAINT" İmer expressed that they are filing a complaint against the individuals and institutions involved in the negligence, stating, "Of course, since it is a legal process, we had to file a complaint. Our complaints are not individual. We are complaining about the institution, the director, the reception staff, the teachers, and of course, those who caused the violation."
"A FINGER WRAPPED IN A NAPKIN AND WAITING FOR AN AMBULANCE" İmer stated that they were not given clear information at the time of the incident and learned that the finger was severed at the hospital, saying, "There was no first aid when this incident occurred. A finger wrapped in a napkin and waiting for an ambulance. We first saw our child at the hospital. The school administration did not provide us with any information regarding the incident. In fact, even when the child was about to go into surgery, our teachers could not explain what the child had eaten or drunk, or when she last ate. We proceeded by asking our child and entered the surgery process. The administration has approaches like 'We are curious about Mavi, when will you return to school?' However, we have never heard that any precautions have been taken, that the door has been changed, or that the assistant teacher has started working," he expressed.
İmer stated that they want precautions to be taken at the school to prevent other children from being harmed, saying, "We will somehow get through this. We will find our way with another school and other treatments. There are 300 children studying there, and 600 parents. We demand that these children continue their education without suffering more. We are legally behind this issue with occupational safety experts and necessary sanctions," he said.
"WE DIDN'T KNOW THE FINGER WAS SEVERED UNTIL WE SAW IT AT THE HOSPITAL" Dicle Taktak, who was informed by the school administration about the situation, stated, "I dropped her off at school around 9:00 AM. I received a call around 10:30 AM. They said, 'Mavi pinched her finger in the door. Can you come to the school?' Even though I said, 'I am coming right away,' five minutes later they said, 'We are going to the hospital by ambulance.' Until the doctor opened her finger at the hospital, we thought, 'She pinched her finger in the door, and two stitches will be needed.' It was at that moment we realized the finger was severed," she said.
"LEGAL PROCESS HAS STARTED" Taktak expressed her shock upon seeing that the finger was severed and emphasized that all necessary precautions should be taken in educational institutions, saying, "We entrust our children. We are working parents. Our children need to receive education and learn something. They need to socialize with their friends. This is not just for my daughter. Precautions need to be taken for many children, for the lives and futures of many children. It is a legal case, and the legal process has started," she said.
"I CRIED WHEN MY FINGER GOT PINCHED IN THE DOOR" Mavi İmer also said, "I told the teacher that I wanted to go to the bathroom. I went to the bathroom, and when I came out, my finger got pinched in the door. No one came with me to the bathroom. When my finger got pinched in the door, the teachers came and took me from there to the hospital. I cried when my finger got pinched in the door," she said.
School officials contacted by phone stated that they could not make any explanations.
