UEFA has announced that there will be a significant change in the Champions League format starting from the 2027/2028 season. According to the new decision, the defending champion will play the opening match of each season at home on Tuesday.
According to the decision made, the opening match of each season in the Champions League will be played by the previous year's champion in front of their own fans. It was stated that this practice was implemented with the aim of "enhancing the championship legacy and prestige" of the tournament.
ADJUSTMENT ON MATCH DAYS
According to the new format, the match schedule for the first week will also change:
- Tuesday: The opening match of the tournament (at the home of the last champion)
- Wednesday and Thursday: Other matches of the first week
With this arrangement, it was reported that UEFA aims to make the start of the tournament a larger media event.
NO DECISION YET FOR WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
UEFA has not yet made a clear statement on whether the same practice will be implemented in the Women's Champions League. Sources suggested that this change will first be tested in the men's tournament and then could be adapted to the women's organization.
POSITIVE RECEPTION IN THE FOOTBALL COMMUNITY
The new format has generally been positively received by football fans and clubs. UEFA officials state that this practice will both increase spectator interest and create a "tradition of celebrating the prestige of the champion team."
