The locust density, claimed to have come through the Balkans and effective in the Thrace region, Istanbul, and Bursa, has now shown itself in Diyarbakır. Giant carnivorous locusts, drawing attention with their size in the rural area of Çermik district, astonished onlookers.
Giant carnivorous grasshoppers have appeared at various points in the Kral Yolu area of the Çermik district of Diyarbakır. This species, whose Latin name is "Saga ephippigera," has become a center of attention for both locals and visitors due to its size and the sound it makes.
THEY COME DOWN TO SETTLEMENTS WHEN THEY CANNOT FIND FOOD
Giant carnivorous grasshoppers, frequently seen in fields and forests, sometimes descend into settlements when they face food shortages in nature.
Tour guide Mehmet Musa, who was on a tour in the Kral Yolu area, recounted his encounter with the giant insects, stating that he had never seen such giant carnivorous grasshoppers before and found them quite unique.
PROF. DR. SATAR: THEIR LENGTH CAN REACH 25 CENTIMETERS
Prof. Dr. Ali Satar, who made statements on the subject, highlighted the physical structure and habitats of carnivorous grasshoppers. Satar noted that these grasshoppers can reach lengths of up to 25 centimeters and stated that the species lives in high-altitude areas of Southeastern Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, and other regions.
"THEY ARE VERY BENEFICIAL FOR AGRICULTURE, WE MUST PROTECT THEM"
Prof. Dr. Ali Satar emphasized that despite their appearance, giant grasshoppers are completely harmless and stated that these insects are natural protectors for agricultural lands. Satar warned farmers and citizens, using the following expressions:
"They have no harm to humans or agriculture. They are beneficial to agriculture. Because these carnivorous grasshoppers eat harmful insects, they are very beneficial for agriculture. Therefore, we must protect them."
