The school bell will ring on September 9th for approximately 20 million students in primary and secondary education institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. Preschool and first grade students started their adaptation program on September 2nd. Students who spent most of their holidays with tablets and phones will have a hard time returning to school. Because with the regulation introduced by the Ministry of National Education in the 2023-2024 academic year, it is now forbidden to have information tools, especially mobile phones, in the classroom. In fact, not only in Turkey but also in many countries, mobile phone bans are implemented in schools. UNESCO PUBLISHED A REPORTUNESCO called for a global ban on the use of smartphones by students in schools in its "2023 Global Education Monitoring" report. The report stated that excessive use of mobile phones has a negative impact on low educational performance, and high screen time has a negative effect on children's emotional stability. The reasons for the bans in countries are also the same. So, does the use of mobile phones in schools really have such a negative impact on children and young people? EXPERTS POINT OUT TWO IMPORTANT FACTORSIn an interview with Milliyet newspaper regarding the issue that is being monitored worldwide, Prof. Dr. Ayşe Bilge Selçuk, a Clinical Psychologist and Faculty Member of the Psychology Department at MEF University, said, "The use of mobile phones in schools is detrimental to the child's ability to focus on the lesson and their social relationships. The results of psychological research show that when phones are banned in schools, more positive results are obtained in terms of both academic and psychological aspects, as well as managing attention and social relationships. Banning phones in schools is the right decision, but it does not mean that we will not benefit from digital technology in education. On the contrary, it is necessary to take advantage of it and give strong emphasis to digital literacy within the education system." NO ROOM FOR CLASS MOTHERS IN THE NEW TERMMeanwhile, Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin made important statements before the upcoming academic year and stated that the class mother practice will not be allowed due to the negative effects it causes. Minister Tekin said, "I would like to remind you once again that we do not allow the 'class mother' practice and similar forms of parental support that are not included in the legislation due to the negative effects it causes."
