With the new regulation regarding technological devices, spare parts for mobile phones and tablets will be guaranteed for at least 7 years, and it will be mandatory for devices to be resistant to drops from a height of 45 centimeters. This measure, expected to come into effect in June, will play a significant role in the transition to sustainable technology.

The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) is preparing to introduce new regulations for technological devices, primarily smartphones and tablets. The draft regulation, prepared within the framework of compliance with European Union (EU) legislation, aims to make devices more environmentally friendly and durable.

According to a news report in Türkiye Gazetesi, in the new regulation, after devices such as phones, tablets, speakers, and cameras are taken off the market, manufacturers will be required to continue providing spare parts for these products for at least 7 years. This way, the lifespan of devices will be extended, offering consumers long-term usage opportunities and reducing electronic waste.

MANDATORY RESETTING SOFTWARE IS COMING

As part of the regulation aimed at increasing security in the second-hand device market, a resetting software that ensures the permanent deletion of all personal information will be made mandatory. This will allow users who want to dispose of their devices to securely clean their data.

DEVICES WILL BE MORE DURABLE

Under the new standards, smartphones and tablets will have to pass certain durability tests. Devices will need to withstand at least 45 drops without cases or protective accessories. Additionally, the screens will not fall below a certain hardness level against scratches and will be made more resistant to the entry of foreign objects and water splashes.

NEW CONDITIONS FOR UPDATE POLICIES

Manufacturers and importers will also face certain obligations regarding operating system updates. Long-term software support must be provided in a way that does not negatively affect the user experience. The regulation, expected to come into effect in June, will protect consumer rights and ensure that electronic devices are environmentally friendly.
