The contractor company Bayburt Group İnşaat, which started the construction of Bayburt-Gümüşhane Airport 7 years ago, continues to face backlash from citizens due to its inability to complete the project. The Bayburt Group İnşaat company, which has not been able to finish its ongoing projects, has failed to complete the Kop Tunnel for 13 years, the Vauk Tunnel for 8 years, and the Bayburt-Gümüşhane Airport for 7 years.
CONCERNS ARE GROWING
During the groundbreaking ceremony of Gümüşhane-Bayburt Airport on June 13, 2018, then-Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım announced that the airport would open in 2020 and stated that he would now be flying to Bayburt. However, the airport, which could not open in 2020, was again addressed by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, who emphasized that "It will be late, but it will not be weak," stating that the airport would be operational in 2026. Despite the announcement by Minister Uraloğlu, who gave good news to the people of Bayburt at the AK Party Bayburt 8th Ordinary Provincial Congress on December 14, 2024, the pitiful view of the construction site captured from the air has increased concerns that the airport will not be completed by this date either.
RİZE-ARTVİN AIRPORT, WHICH WAS GROUNDED IN THE SAME YEARS, IS COMPLETED, BAYBURT-GÜMÜŞHANE AIRPORT IS NOT
The Rize-Artvin Airport, which was grounded on April 3, 2018, and opened for service on May 14, 2022, was completed in 4 years, while citizens are curious about why the Bayburt-Gümüşhane Airport, which was also grounded in 2018, could not be completed. Citizens criticizing the contractor company expressed their frustration to Bayburt Group İnşaat, saying, "Enough already, if you can't finish it, leave it." On the other hand, in a statement made on the official website of Bayburt Group İnşaat on September 8, 2020, it was stated that the first flight would take place in 2023.
400 MILLION LIRA ALLOCATED FOR THE AIRPORT'S INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS
Bayburt Deputy Prof. Dr. Orhan Ateş announced on his social media account that 400 million lira was allocated from the 2025 budget of the Presidency Strategy and Budget Directorate for the superstructure construction of Bayburt-Gümüşhane Airport. In Ateş's post dated February 19, 2024, he stated, "400 million TL has been allocated from the 2025 budget of the Presidency Strategy and Budget Directorate for the superstructure construction of Bayburt-Gümüşhane Airport. We continue our efforts to ensure that our airport serves our fellow citizens as soon as possible. I express my gratitude to our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has never withheld his support from Bayburt, and to the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu."
"LET DISTANT PLACES BE CLOSE"
Not believing that the airport will be completed soon, Muhammet Güncan said, "This airport will eventually be completed, but you cannot predict how many years it will take, is that correct?" To which he replied, "Yes, unfortunately. I wish it would be finished, and civilization would come. We as a public could reach something. These are not luxury things for us. Our children and youth should also use it, and we should go back and forth. Let distant places be close. Why not?"
"WE ARE AGGRIEVED AS BAYBURT PEOPLE DUE TO BOTH VAUK TUNNEL, KOP TUNNEL, AND THE AIRPORT"
Ömer Meriç, a former employee of Bayburt Group İnşaat, stated that the people of Bayburt are experiencing significant difficulties in terms of transportation, drawing attention to the loss of life in the collapses during the construction of the Kop Tunnel, saying, "As Bayburt people, we are very aggrieved." Meriç held Bayburt Group İnşaat responsible for the ongoing delays in the projects.
"I WAS 28 YEARS OLD WHEN THE TUNNEL WAS GROUNDED, NOW I AM 41"
Meriç, who stated that he was present at the groundbreaking ceremony of the tunnel in 2018 and was 28 years old at that time, said, "We opened the tunnel. We were working at that company back then; I was 28 years old, and now I am 41. I hope this construction does not last another 13-14 years. The mentioned company could not open the Vauk Tunnel or the Kop Tunnel. I hope they will hand over the airport. We have no information about the airport, but a promise was made, it was said 2026, and I hope it will open by that date; our expectation is in that direction," he said.
"MAY NO ONE FALL INTO THE HANDS OF BAYBURT GROUP"
Meriç, who claimed to have worked at Bayburt Group İnşaat for 8 years, knows the internal workings of the company well and is closely acquainted with its owners, said, "May Allah not let anyone fall into their hands. May my Lord not let even my enemy fall into the hands of this company, Bayburt Group."
