The former rector, Prof. Dr. Murat Erman, brought Siirt University into the spotlight with his interest in Ferraris. This time, the university is in the news due to the current rector, Nihat Şındak, and the 159 million Turkish lira rectorate residence and office. With expenditures made before the announcement of the position, Şındak spent 193,500 lira to install screens in his residence and lay parquet flooring in his office.
The obsession with position and luxury at Siirt University continues unabated. The university has come into the spotlight not only due to the Ferrari obsession of its former rector, Prof. Dr. Murat Erman, but also because of the current rector, Prof. Dr. Nihat Şındak, who has a rectorate residence and office worth 159 million Turkish Lira.
193 THOUSAND LIRA MOSQUITO NET
Many unnecessary expenses, from changing the flooring in Şındak's rectorate residence and office to installing mosquito nets, were covered by public funds. According to a report by Nefes, it has been revealed that a total of 887,500 Turkish Lira was spent without a tender for just 4 maintenance and repair operations during Rector Şındak's term.
The expenses are as follows:
- Replacement of faulty mosquito nets in the rectorate residence and broken floor tiles in the office: 193,500 TL
- Moss cleaning at Kezer Campus: 240,000 TL
- Road and step repairs: 250,000 TL
- Installation of a suspended ceiling in the cafeteria building: 204,000 TL
All of these expenses were carried out through the direct procurement method, as stipulated in Article 22/d of the Public Procurement Law No. 4734, which only allows for mandatory and exceptional situations.
"AS IF IT'S A FERRARI"
Prof. Dr. Murat Erman, who served as rector of Siirt University from 2012 to 2020, had come under criticism for ordering a luxury official vehicle by listing its features. Responding to the criticisms, Erman claimed that the luxury features he requested for the official vehicle were exaggerated, stating, "It's as if it's a Ferrari. This is a car that every rector has." Erman resigned from his position as rector on July 29, 2020, due to health issues.
WHO IS NIHAT ŞINDAK?
Nihat Şındak was born on September 14, 1968. He started his career at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University in 1992. He completed his doctorate in the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University. He worked at Harran University from 1998 to 2013. Nihat Şındak served as the Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Siirt University from 2013 to 2017, and in 2017, he became the Vice Rector of Siirt University. He has published many articles and works. On September 24, 2020, he was appointed as the rector of Siirt University by a Presidential Decree. Şındak has been serving as the rector of Siirt University (SIU) since September 24, 2020.
