At least 35 members of the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab were reportedly neutralized in airstrikes conducted in coordination with the Somali army and the Turkish Armed Forces in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region.
TURKISH F-16S STRIKE AL-SHABAAB TERRORISTS
In a written statement from the Somali Ministry of Defense, it was stated that the operations were carried out this morning using F-16 fighter jets, targeting caves, weapons depots, and hideouts used by Al-Shabaab members. The airstrikes neutralized at least 35 Al-Shabaab members and left more than 20 organization members seriously injured.
NUMEROUS EXPLOSIONS OCCURRED
The statement noted that multiple large explosions occurred in the targeted area following the strikes. This indicated the presence of weapons stockpiles, explosive materials, and military equipment belonging to the organization in the region. It was also reported that vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices prepared for use in terrorist attacks and organization members were present in the operation area.
The statement thanked international partners for their support in the fight against terrorism and emphasized that operations against Al-Shabaab would continue.
Al-Shabaab, which emerged in Somalia in 2006, has been carrying out attacks against the Somali government and international peacekeeping forces for many years. Large-scale operations against the organization have been conducted in central and southern regions of the country since 2022, with the support of Somali security forces and international partners.
