The glacial lakes at the summit of Uludağ are still covered with ice in the middle of summer due to the snowiest winter in the last 62 years. While Karagöl has reached its overflow level, the region offers views reminiscent of Antarctica. Mountaineer İsmet Şentürk stated, 'In previous years, there was a gap between the lake and the road. This year, we observed that it reached the overflow level. This is a very rare natural phenomenon.'
The glacial lakes at the summit of Uludağ presented scenes reminiscent of Antarctica in the middle of summer. Some of the lakes, where the ice has not yet melted, have risen above road level. Experts attributed the density of water and ice in the lakes to the snowiest winter season in Uludağ in the last 62 years.
TEMPERATURE AT THE SUMMIT MINUS 5 DEGREES
Experienced mountaineer from Bursa, İsmet Şentürk, recorded one of the most unusual natural events in recent years during his observations in the lake region. Walking on the icy area around the glacial lakes, Şentürk spent the night at the summit where the temperature was below -5 degrees in midsummer. The icy lakes, reminiscent of Antarctica among melting ice blocks, fascinated nature lovers with their fairy-tale-like images. The master mountaineer also identified and recorded changes caused by avalanche currents in the icy lake.
"MELTING SNOWS CONTINUE TO FILL THE LAKES"
Şentürk stated that 2026 has gone down in history as the snowiest winter in the last 62 years, saying, "In the lake region, we are experiencing an unprecedented level of fullness. Snow levels are much higher compared to previous years. Melting snows continue to fill the lakes. Drainage is low, but because the amount of melting snow is high, the lakes are extremely full."
"REACHED OVERFLOW LEVEL"
Emphasizing that Karagöl in particular has reached overflow level, Şentürk said, "In past years, there was a gap between the lake and the road. This year, we observed that it has reached overflow level. This is a very rare natural event. Uludağ always surprises us. Even if we explore it for years, its nature is inexhaustible."
In the images, the ice-covered lakes and polar landscapes formed around them in midsummer drew attention. This situation, offering a unique visual feast for nature lovers in the region, once again revealed the climatic diversity of Uludağ.
