In the US, a settlement has been reached in the major lawsuit filed against Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads. In the lawsuit brought by many states on the accusation that the platforms harm children, Meta agreed to pay $16.68 billion in compensation. Additionally, within the scope of the regulations to be made, daily usage limits and nighttime usage restrictions will be introduced for young users.
A verdict has been reached in the lawsuit filed against tech giant Meta in the US. Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads, has agreed to a settlement and to pay a record fine.
WILL PAY A $17 BILLION FINE
The Washington DC Attorney General's Office called the decision "a major public health victory for young people," and under the agreement, Meta will pay $16.68 billion in compensation.
RESTRICTIONS TO BE PLACED ON TEENAGERS' USAGE
As part of the agreement, regulations will be implemented on social media platforms nationwide. Accordingly, daily usage limits will be imposed on teenagers, and usage restrictions will be applied during nighttime hours.
The lawsuit stated that Meta deliberately exploited children for profit and misled the public by claiming its platforms were safe. It was also noted that Meta's own internal research revealed that Instagram and Facebook are addictive and harmful.
