Associate Professor Dr. Oğuzhan Yanar, a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), stated that the "black soldier fly," which can consume almost all types of organic waste and can be used for agriculture with its manure, should be evaluated in terms of the country's economy and environmental management, calling on the authorities to take action.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuzhan Yanar from OMU Biology Department stated that the black soldier fly, which can consume organic waste and convert it into valuable fertilizer, presents a significant opportunity for the environment and the economy, calling on the authorities to take action.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuzhan Yanar emphasized that this insect species, which can be produced in specialized laboratory environments, could play a major role in the recycling of biological waste. He noted that the black soldier fly quickly converts waste into organic fertilizer, contributing to agricultural productivity while also reducing environmental pollution. Yanar stated that this insect has significant potential in terms of biotechnology and sustainable agriculture. He said, "The contribution of this species to the biological cycle is immense. Its production needs to be encouraged through state-supported projects for both waste management and sustainable agriculture. Additionally, the protein-rich larvae can also be used as animal feed."
"CAN EAT EVERY WASTE"
In Turkey, where the issue of zero waste is gaining importance every day, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuzhan Yanar, who produces the 'black soldier fly' that can eat almost every waste, informed middle school students about the insect. Visiting Canik Imam Hatip Middle School with his team, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Oğuzhan Yanar explained the black soldier fly to the students. Conducting a hands-on training, Yanar had the children put the waste from fruits like apples and pears into the box containing the insects. The fact that the insects consumed the waste within minutes surprised the students.
"HAS A VERY FAST WASTE CONSUMPTION RATE"
Providing information about the insect, Oğuzhan Yanar said, "The black soldier fly is extremely valuable. It has very fast waste consumption rates within a 40-day life cycle. Subsequently, organic fertilizer is produced. The insect itself can later be turned into chicken or fish feed. In addition to these, it is also possible to obtain other valuable products. We urgently need to implement such projects. We see the recent projects initiated by our Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change. We believe our insect project should be among these projects. We call on local authorities. Please be informed about this issue. Listen to us. There is so much production, and as a result, there is so much waste going to the trash. We look at it with the mindset of saving as much as we can. We believe we can save significant things with this insect. We know that it is extremely effective in reducing unwanted gases, such as carbon monoxide and methane, which can create greenhouse effects. We have identified these through our studies. Additionally, we know that this insect produces very high-quality fertilizer. We are aware that a fertilizer essential for healthy agriculture has emerged. These children are the future of our society. Sometimes we explain to today's adults, but they do not understand. Today's event has successfully achieved its purpose. We provided our children with very useful information regarding reducing waste and the recyclability of the trash they throw away. We brought our insects to them live and ensured they could see this. We will continue these informative sessions," he stated.
