Recently, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who came to Turkey, first went to Diyarbakır and then to Van, and later made a scandalous post on her social media account. In her post, Thunberg shared a photo from Van and chose her location as "Kurdistan". SCANDALOUS STATEMENTSIn her post, Thunberg referred to the Eastern Anatolia region as "Northern Kurdistan" and said, "I have been traveling in Northern Kurdistan recently and met with Kurdish people from all walks of life. They shared countless stories of the systematic oppression and persecution they face, and a history filled with massacres." She used the following expressions: "The destruction and exploitation of nature - illegal logging, the sacrifice of regions for mining companies, and fires - is one of the many tools used as part of the ongoing attacks against the Kurds. This often leads to the destruction of local communities and biodiversity, as well as forced displacement. The erasure of culture and identity, state violence, political prisoners, forced displacement, ecological genocides and losses, are just a few examples of the discrimination people face in their daily lives, as well as the denial of their right to self-determination and freedom." DEMANDED AUTONOMYTo build real bridges of solidarity in Turkey, autonomy and self-governance for Kurdish regions is essential. The Kurdish people deserve the right to shape their own lives, cultures, and communities. Turkey must clarify its stance towards Kurds and other minority groups by enshrining their rights in the constitution. The government continues to use "terrorism" as an excuse to silence its political opponents. Tens of thousands of politically active individuals remain imprisoned without fair trial. International organizations such as the ECHR, UN, and Amnesty International have condemned this and called for their release. For a sustainable peace and a just future, the rights of the Kurds to freedom and autonomy must be respected, and the brutal attacks against Kurdistan must end. No one is free until everyone is free.
