Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated that US President Donald Trump, whom President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke with several times on the phone last month, plans to attend the NATO Summit to be held in Ankara on July 7-8.
Fidan made an assessment on Bloomberg TV as part of his visit to Singapore.
"TRUMP PLANS TO ATTEND THE NATO SUMMIT IN ANKARA"
In response to a question regarding US President Trump's attendance at the NATO Ankara Summit, Fidan replied, "As far as we know, yes, he plans to attend." He stated that Trump, who spoke with President Erdogan several times on the phone last month, confirmed each time that he would attend the summit.
"THE US CONSTANTLY PRESSURES ALLIES ON DEFENSE SPENDING"
Fidan emphasized that despite political rhetoric, the US maintains its commitment to the Alliance and has shown no indication of planning to implement warnings about withdrawing from NATO. He used the following statements:
"The US constantly pressures allies to increase defense spending and take greater responsibility for their own security. Europeans have received the message and have already taken steps within NATO to raise defense budgets. We will review the progress made when leaders come together."
"I AM NOT SURE ABOUT ISRAEL'S INTENTIONS"
Minister Fidan highlighted Turkey's support for the negotiations between the US and Iran, underlining that both sides are making "sincere" efforts to extend the ceasefire.
Indicating that the Israeli army's attacks against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, despite the ceasefire, pose "a significant risk that could undermine" these talks, Fidan said, "I am sure the Americans and Iranians are sincere. They want a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, but I am not sure about Israel's intentions."
