According to BBC News, world-famous singer and actress Selena Gomez has revealed that she used nicotine e-cigarettes for a long time and that this permanently changed her voice. The 34-year-old star made the confession in a video she shared on her Instagram account on Sunday.
In the video, Gomez said, "I can't change my voice. I used too many nicotine e-cigarettes." Emphasizing that quitting nicotine is very difficult, the famous star said, "If you're going through this or thinking about trying it, let me tell you, it's not worth it at all."
"It's very stupid and it changed my voice," Gomez said, adding with a laugh, "If you don't like listening to my voice, I completely understand, I don't mind. Don't listen." The star also announced that she had recently quit nicotine: "I'm so excited that I quit, I hope I can keep it up. It's very hard, but if you're struggling with something, you can overcome it too."
Gomez, who has been battling the chronic autoimmune disease lupus, had previously implied that the disease affected her vocal cords. Lupus flare-ups can cause inflammation around the larynx, making the voice sound hoarse and strained. Gomez's voice has also deepened with age; some fans were sharing compilation videos showing the change in her voice.
The singer had a kidney transplant from her friend Francia Raisa in 2017. After the confession, some social media users criticized her for using nicotine despite the kidney transplant. Most of her fans, however, supported the star for her frankness about addiction.
The report recalled that a recent doctor's report linked e-cigarettes to respiratory problems, wheezing, coughing, dental problems, sleep disorders and mental health problems, while their long-term effects are not yet known. Last month, British singer Lola Young also said that, due to the effects of e-cigarettes, breathing had become difficult for her.
