In the case of Serap Avcı, who is being tried in connection with the death of her husband Yasin Avcı, the fifth hearing took place today. The court decided to continue her detention after the witness testimonies and adjourned the hearing.

The fifth hearing of the trial of Serap Avcı, who killed her husband Yasin Avcı, who had been violent towards her, was held today at the Küçükçekmece 6th High Criminal Court. Avcı stated during the hearing that the main witnesses of the violence she experienced were her husband's family, including her mother-in-law, who were present in the courtroom. Avcı said, "When Yasin beat me and locked me in the room, they all went and sat in the kitchen. No one came to knock on the door and ask how I was." The court decided to continue Avcı's detention and adjourned the hearing.

Serap Avcı, a mother of one, appeared before the judge today, charged with killing her violent husband Yasin Avcı with a knife at the Küçükçekmece 6th High Criminal Court. During the hearing, Avcı recounted the violence she endured throughout her marriage and requested her acquittal.

"THEY WERE ALL THERE"

During the hearing, Serap Avcı stated that she was systematically subjected to violence by her husband Yasin Avcı, while the victim's family and lawyers claimed that there were no witnesses to the violence. Avcı said that the main witnesses of the violence she experienced were her husband's family, including her mother-in-law, who were present in the courtroom. Avcı stated, "When Yasin beat me and locked me in the room, they all went and sat in the kitchen. No one came to knock on the door and ask how I was."

"EVERYONE WAS AFRAID"

Serap Avcı responded to the statements from the relatives of the victim Yasin Avcı, questioning, "If he beat you, why didn't you leave? Why did you have a child? If you were subjected to systematic violence, why didn't you file a complaint?" In her defense in court, she said, "Everyone was afraid of Yasin. I was afraid too. Many people in the neighborhood have been beaten by him. You ask why I didn't file a complaint. If I had filed a complaint, he would have come back, and nothing would have changed."

At the end of the trial, it was decided that Avcı's detention would continue, and the hearing was adjourned to December 9 at 10:00 AM.

CALL FOR SUPPORT FOR SERAP AVCI FROM WOMEN'S ORGANIZATIONS

After the hearing, a statement was made in front of the Küçükçekmece Courthouse. Women chanting slogans such as "Not male justice, but real justice," "Serap Avcı is not alone," and "Freedom for Serap" said, "Today, we were at the Küçükçekmece Courthouse as the 'Feminist Campaign Group for Serap' for the 5th session of the case against Serap Avcı. Today, in this courtroom, the public prosecutor presented their opinion. In this opinion, a request was made for Serap to be punished and for her detention to continue, and the court decided to continue her detention today," they stated. The statement continued:

"SHE IS IN PRISON FOR TAKING CONTROL OF HER LIFE"

"As feminists following this case, we have things to say against this opinion. There is much to say against this opinion. Because Serap is in prison for taking control of her life. We know this. Additionally, we also know that while Serap is being tried for taking control of her life, a discussion of unjust provocation was brought before us today along with the opinion, while she has been in detention for over 20 months. And we know that the elements of this unjust provocation discussion contain all the details of why Serap had to kill to avoid being killed. We are faced with an opinion that is merely a copy-paste of the indictment. One of the reasons we are following this case is to expose the systematic male violence here."

Recalling that Serap Avcı took control of her life against male violence and requested acquittal in every hearing due to legitimate defense, the women continued:

"MALE JUSTICE IS NOT REAL JUSTICE"

"Today, the public prosecutor requested Serap to be punished and for an unjust provocation reduction to be applied to this punishment. However, we know that the same requests can be evaluated for legitimate defense. We know that Serap needs to be acquitted because she acted in legitimate defense as a result of the violence she endured for 7.5 years. Today, this session brought an opinion. But as feminists following this hearing, we do not accept this opinion. Acceptance of this opinion is not possible. We are following this trial for real justice, not male justice. The next session will take place on December 9 at 10 AM. We call on all women to come to the Küçükçekmece Courthouse for the final session, for the verdict session, to say freedom for Serap, for all women in prison who have taken control of their lives to be released."
