Sara Gilson, a mother of two who launched a social media campaign to expose her husband's sexual abuse of a 15-year-old girl, was shot dead in her home by her estranged husband, from whom she had obtained a restraining order. This tragic murder has left two orphaned children behind.
43-year-old social media influencer Sara Gilson, living in the US state of Oklahoma, announced the reason for the end of her marriage through a popular TikTok interview trend. Using this entertaining trend where users pretend to be giving an interview for a serious crime documentary, Gilson added a note to her video: "Preparing for when a documentary about the man who will soon be my ex-husband and whom I just learned is a pedophile is released." The video, which has been viewed over 6 million times, had a comment from the woman saying "I wish it were a joke," and this post marked the beginning of a tragic end.
ALLEGATION OF ABUSE AGAINST A CHILD ON THE BASKETBALL TEAM
Behind the horrifying incident, it emerged that investigations and restraining orders had been filed against 48-year-old husband Jeremiah 'Shawn' Duffey some time ago. Duffey, who coached a youth basketball team, was allegedly caught red-handed by another coach kissing and touching a 15-year-old girl on the team. In a petition submitted to the court by the victim's mother, it was claimed that Duffey offered the young girl money in exchange for her silence, sent her messages, and called her to his hotel room during a tournament trip.
Following the scandal, Sara Gilson stated that her husband had a gun at home and had threatened suicide, requesting an emergency protection and restraining order. The court ordered Duffey to be removed from the home and not to come within 90 meters of his wife, extending the protection order until the end of August. However, no arrest was made against the suspect during this period.
"MAY HE NEVER FIND ME AGAIN"
Days before being killed, Gilson went on a boat trip with friends and shared videos on social media about how female solidarity saved lives. The words "Whatever that damn thing is, may it never find me again" in the influencer's last post seemed to foreshadow the approaching danger. Shortly after this post, Duffey violated the restraining order, forcibly entered Gilson's home in Owasso, and shot the mother of two children, killing her.
TWO ORPHANED CHILDREN LEFT BEHIND
As the entire community mourned the incident, a fundraising campaign was launched for Gilson's two surviving children.
