Following the two-day NATO Leaders' Summit in Ankara, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced they had reached an agreement with the United States on the purchase and deployment of Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany. Merz stated the deal would close a strategic gap in Germany's defense, while the Berlin administration said the step aims to strengthen deterrence against Russia.

Addressing members of parliament in Berlin following the NATO Leaders Summit held in Ankara, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that they had reached an agreement with the US on the purchase and deployment of Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany.

Merz stated that the deal was finalized during his meetings with the Washington administration within the scope of the NATO Summit, adding that the summit exceeded expectations.

"WE ARE CLOSING THE CRITICAL GAP IN OUR DEFENSE"

Emphasizing that Tomahawk missiles represent a significant step for Germany's defense capacity, Merz said, "By doing this, we are closing the critical strategic gap in our defense. At the same time, we are working to develop our own European systems and deploy them in Europe."

UNCERTAINTY FOLLOWED TRUMP'S DECISION

The plan to deploy Tomahawk missiles in Germany fell into uncertainty after US President Donald Trump announced in May that he would reduce the American military presence in Germany. This decision was interpreted as the cancellation of the previous US administration's plan to station a US battalion equipped with long-range Tomahawk missiles in Germany.

DETERRENCE AGAINST RUSSIA IS AIMED

The Berlin administration argues that Tomahawk missiles will provide a strong deterrent against Russia until Europe develops its own long-range missile systems. With this step, Germany aims to both strengthen its defense capacity and support Europe's security infrastructure.
