69-year-old Adalet U., who claimed she found her husband dead in Bursa, then cut his body into pieces with an axe and threw them in the trash before filing a missing person report, appeared before the judge. After the woman, who is being tried on charges of aggravated life imprisonment, made a chilling defense saying 'I endured 50 years of oppression, I cut him into pieces out of fear over 5-6 hours,' the court decided to place the defendant under observation to determine her mental health.
A trial has begun for a woman who, after claiming to have found her husband dead in the Osmangazi district of Bursa, dismembered his body and disposed of it in the trash before filing a missing person report.
Attending the hearing at the Bursa 9th Heavy Penal Court were the detained defendant Adalet U. (69), who faces an aggravated life sentence on charges of "premeditated murder against a spouse," along with a representative from the Ministry of Family and Social Services and the lawyers of the parties involved.
SHE DESCRIBED THE INCIDENT IN HER DEFENSE
In her defense, defendant Adalet U. stated that she woke up late in the morning and saw her husband lying on the ground when she went down to take out the trash.
Adalet U. said that her husband did not respond, and she waited until evening. "I was afraid they would blame me for his death. I spread a bag over where he died and cut him with an ax, breaking him into pieces," she stated.
THE DISMEMBERMENT PROCESS TOOK 5-6 HOURS
Adalet U., noting that she had experience with animal slaughter before and thus did not struggle, said, "Since he was stiff, his blood had clotted, so there was no bleeding. The dismemberment process took about 5-6 hours. I placed the pieces into 5-10 bags and threw them into various trash cans at night."
Adalet U. explained that she later washed her clothes and disposed of the bags and ax she used. She also stated that out of fear, she did not tell her sons about the incident, which led them to go to the police station together to file a missing person report.
"I HAVE ENDURED 50 YEARS OF OPPRESSION"
Claiming that her husband had mistreated her for years, Adalet U. said, "I have endured 40-50 years of oppression."
HER SONS DID NOT FILE A COMPLAINT
The defendant's son, Ferhat U., explained that they began searching after mosque congregants called to say that their father had not shown up and they could not reach him. Stating that they had searched everywhere but found no trace, Ferhat U. said:
"Eventually, the homicide unit got involved, and they took our whole family to the police station. Later, they said our mother confessed to this act. We removed 13 truckloads of trash from the house. Since we are not talking about a normal person, I do not wish to file a complaint."
The defendant's other son, Murat U., who described the process, said they were in shock after their mother's confession. The defendant's lawyer claimed that the client was not of sound mind and requested a new psychiatric evaluation. The court panel decided to place the defendant under observation and adjourned the hearing.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Adalet U. (69), residing in a house in the Selamet neighborhood of Osmangazi district, had reported her husband missing. During investigations, it was determined that Adalet U. made contradictory statements, prompting the Bursa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to order an investigation by the Homicide Bureau of the Public Order Branch Directorate. As a result of examinations on samples taken from the residence, biological evidence belonging to the missing person was found.
Upon deepening the investigation, teams from the Bursa Public Order Branch Directorate Homicide Bureau detained Adalet U., her sons Ferhat (48) and Murat U. (50), and M.Ö. (65). After police procedures, the suspects were referred to the courthouse, where Adalet U. was arrested by the duty magistrate, while the others were released under judicial supervision.
