A snake that appeared on a passenger plane in Japan caused the flight to be canceled. The snake, about 40 centimeters long, was seen in the cockpit before takeoff and then disappeared; after hours of searching, it was found under the carpet in the cabin aisle. How the snake, which was determined to be non-venomous, got onto the plane became a matter of curiosity.

A snake spotted in the cockpit of a passenger plane preparing for takeoff in Japan caused an extraordinary incident in aviation. The flight was cancelled as the aircraft was searched for hours to find the snake, which was about 40 centimetres long. The snake was caught about 24 hours later under the carpet in the cabin aisle.

In Japan, a snake seen on a passenger aircraft operated by Japan Air Commuter (JAC), which operates under Japan Airlines (JAL), caused panic. On the plane preparing to fly from Fukuoka Airport to Kagoshima, pilots who saw a small animal in the cockpit before takeoff reported the situation to the authorities.

In the incident on October 19, the animal the pilot saw disappeared from view within a short time. Despite initial searches on the aircraft, the animal could not be found, and the flight was cancelled for safety reasons. The travel plans of 43 passengers were affected by the incident.

THE SNAKE WAS FOUND UNDER THE CARPET

Maintenance teams continuing their searches on the aircraft reached a result about 24 hours later. On October 20, when the aisle carpet in the rear section of the cabin was lifted, a snake about 40 centimetres long was found hidden underneath.

In an assessment by experts, the snake was identified as belonging to a non-venomous striped snake species commonly seen in Japan. The snake was caught and handed over to the relevant teams.

HOW IT GOT ONTO THE PLANE IS UNKNOWN

It has not yet been determined from which point or how the snake entered the plane. The airline announced that they had not encountered a similar incident in the cabin of a passenger aircraft before. It is considered possible that the snake entered the plane from nature.

For flight safety, electrical cables and other equipment were checked. After the necessary inspections, it was reported that the aircraft was returned to service.

The extraordinary incident once again demonstrated why even the smallest foreign creature on an aircraft is handled carefully for flight safety.
