US President Donald Trump commented on the indirect negotiations with Iran in Doha, stating, "We are having very good talks." While Iran has rejected direct contact, critical topics such as a 60-day ceasefire and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz are on the table in the talks mediated by Qatar and Pakistan.

Indirect technical talks, eagerly awaited by the whole world, between US and Iranian officials began in Qatar's capital, Doha. It was stated that the talks are being conducted with Qatari and Pakistani mediators and are progressing based on a memorandum of understanding previously agreed upon by the parties.

"THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE IS IRAN NOT HAVING A NUCLEAR WEAPON"

US President Donald Trump, who appeared before cameras after the start of the new round of negotiations, gave very optimistic messages regarding diplomatic contacts.

Drawing attention with his positive attitude towards the process, Trump said, "We are having very good talks. We are getting along very well with Iran." When asked the critical question of whether it would turn into an all-out war, the US President gave a clear answer: "The most important issue is Iran not having a nuclear weapon."

IRAN: WE HAVE NO PLAN FOR DIRECT NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE US

In contrast to Trump's moderate messages, the Tehran front continues to maintain diplomatic distance. Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ismail Bekayi confirmed that Iran's delegation in Doha will be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

Bekayi emphasized that they have no plans for "direct" negotiations with the US side at any level in the coming days, once again closing the door to Trump's previously voiced claims of direct talks.

WHAT DOES THE CRITICAL MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING CONTAIN?

The memorandum of understanding, prepared under the mediation of Qatar and Pakistan and forming the backbone of the Doha talks, includes very critical articles that will lower tensions in the region. The prominent topics of the said memorandum are listed as follows:

  • Achieving a comprehensive 60-day ceasefire in the region within the scope of the war and conflict environment that started with the US-Israel attacks.
  • Reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global energy trade and supply chains, to maritime traffic.
  • Establishing a clear timeline (calendar) to reach a final and permanent agreement on Iran's nuclear program.
