Gülşah Bodur, who entered a tanning bed at a beauty center in Kocaeli, was exposed to high temperatures for 22 minutes due to the alleged malfunction of the device's automatic shutdown system. Bodur, who suffered burns on her body, took legal action against the establishment following her health issues. Reacting to the leniency of the sentence given, Bodur also stated that she would appeal the decision.

33-year-old Gülşah Bodur went to a beauty center for a tanning session on May 22, 2024. Allegedly, the automatic shutdown system of the device was disabled during the session. Bodur, who fell asleep inside the cabin, woke up when she felt heat on her body. Exposed to high temperatures for a total of 22 minutes, Bodur fell ill in the evening and went to the hospital. The young woman, who suffered burns on her body, took the incident to court due to the negligence that occurred.

"WHEN I WOKE UP, IT WAS THE 22ND MINUTE"

Stating that she had been receiving services from the same center for a while, Gülşah Bodur described the day of the incident as follows:

"It was a business we trusted. I lost track of time that day. To be honest, I wanted to behave that way in that heat. I pressed the start button, put on my glasses, and when I woke up, it was the 22nd minute. I didn't feel weak at that moment, but I panicked and got up. I opened the door before I started getting dressed and called out to the staff. They said the machine hadn't turned off. I continued to get dressed. The machine started again, and at that moment, they turned it off again. I quickly got dressed and went outside. There is already camera footage in front of the cash register, and there was a brief argument there. I didn't want to ruin my own reputation. I actually regret it; I could have called the police and filed a complaint at that moment. I didn't want to file a complaint; I thought it was a human error, but their blaming me somewhat suppressed me. I was confused about what to do."

"I FELT UNWELL WHEN I GOT HOME"

Stating that she went home after the incident and felt unwell in the evening, Bodur said, "I had a fever and was sweating. Until that time, I didn't want to approach them in that way. I went to the hospital. The police at the hospital guided me. They said, 'People even file lawsuits when they see a flaw while dyeing their hair. Why are you so calm?' I gave my statement to the police. When the doctor who examined me said the same thing, I initiated this process. I saw a dermatologist. The process progressed this way, and I filed a lawsuit. The incident happened a year ago. The leniency of the penalty motivated me. Health shouldn't be this cheap. A fine of 5,800 TL and 5 years of probation were given. This amount is a ridiculous figure. It doesn't feel like a punishment to them. It could happen again, and I am working to prevent that. I don't see it as a punishment; health shouldn't be this cheap; they will pay for it. I feel like I have been suppressed in this situation. I feel repressed. I will appeal this penalty," she said.

"EVEN TAKING A STEP HURT MY JOINTS"

Describing her experiences in the hospital, Bodur said, "I went to the hospital because I had a fever. I went to the emergency room. After they put me on an IV, they examined my body. I explained the situation to them. At that moment, my skin started to hurt; it was untouchable, and my skin had become sensitive. Even when I took a step or moved my arms, my joints started to hurt. After midnight, this pain intensified. They referred me to a dermatologist to get a report. I received the report and submitted it to the court," she said.

"FALLING ASLEEP MAY BE A MISTAKE, BUT IT'S HUMAN NATURE"

Gülşah Bodur also mentioned that she was contacted by the business authorities after the incident, saying, "When they called me, they said, 'We will refund your fee, we will do whatever is necessary.' I don't want a refund. I told them that I would seek my rights. When they said, 'You are at fault too; you shouldn't have fallen asleep,' I became even more frustrated. Falling asleep may be a mistake, but it's human nature. That machine needs to be checked no matter what. After all, there is a person inside. If I had woken up 42 minutes later instead of 22, it could have been worse. There is also footage available. I went to the center during off-peak hours. Evening sessions are busier. They might forget customers during quiet times, but during busy times, they can knock on the door and say, 'Could you hurry up a bit? The customer behind you is waiting for you.' Also, I have my entry and preparation time. I believe half an hour shouldn't be forgotten. They should ask, 'Are you okay?' but that didn't happen either," she expressed.

"22 MINUTES IS VERY HARSH FOR A PERSON WITH FAIR SKIN"

Gülşah Bodur also responded to the criticisms she faced on social media. Bodur said, "Maybe the tanning environment can be harmful, but we don't go there for fun. I go because my skin is sensitive. I go to avoid my skin color fading in the summer. I can't have dark skin anyway. For example, I received bad comments on social media. 22 minutes seemed like a ridiculous amount of time. Those who know understand that 22 minutes is very harsh for a person with fair skin. The problem is not actually 22 minutes. The problem is that the machine runs even 2 minutes longer. That machine was supposed to stop, and I noticed that and stopped it. In these situations, please let everyone seek their rights, and let’s increase our numbers. The more we remain silent, the more trivial these penalties become," she said.
