The Mexican beauty queen and fitness trainer Luz María Barrera Agatón (36) was found dead in the pool of the hotel where she was vacationing. It has emerged that Agatón received threats weeks before her death, and the police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her passing.
The incident occurred at the Coco Resort & Villas hotel located in the Motul area, west of Cancun. Agatón spent time by the pool in the evening with her family and friends during her vacation.
After everyone retired to their rooms for the night, Agatón, who was left alone, did not return to her room until the morning hours. When her loved ones became worried and began searching for her, her body was found in the hotel pool.
Although health teams called to the scene attempted to intervene, it was determined that Agatón had already passed away.
The police are working to determine whether the incident was an accident or a murder. Authorities have learned that they are investigating the possibility of "intentional intervention."
Just two weeks before the tragic event, it was revealed that a threatening banner had been hung in front of Agatón's gym in Merida. Agatón had removed and destroyed the banner herself but did not report it to the police.
Agatón had received similar threats in 2017, during which time she was allegedly targeted alongside former prosecutor Chiri Roberto.
In 2023, another tragic incident occurred at the gym owned by Agatón. Due to the trainer's negligence, a weight fell on a young man, resulting in his death.
The police are also investigating whether there is a connection between these past incidents and Agatón's death.
Luz María Agatón was the vice president of the Yucatán Bodybuilding and Fitness Association and operated her own gym in Merida.
Agatón achieved significant success in her career, winning the Fitness Champion title at the "Mister Mexico" competition in 2017 and being crowned the Queen of the Motul Carnival in 2023. Most recently, she won first place in the "Women’s Bikini" category at the Mr. Olympia Amateur Competition held in Spain.
Evangelina Cimé Mézquita, the president of the Yucatán Bodybuilding and Fitness Association, shared an emotional farewell message for Agatón:
"Sometimes it is impossible to understand why such things happen. We will miss you so much. Your joy, your simplicity... May God give your family patience."
As the investigation continues, Agatón's sudden death has caused great sorrow in the world of sports and beauty in Mexico.
