Nilüfer Doğumsel, a 62-year-old midwife who has been working in Eskişehir for 40 years and has assisted in 3,000 births, discovered that her son-in-law, who married her daughter, was born 31 years ago. This revelation came to light during the bride price ceremony when Nilüfer recalled the moment after her son-in-law said, "You delivered me."

62-year-old midwife Nilüfer Doğumsel, who works at Eskişehir City Hospital, is celebrating her 40th year in the profession. She decided to retire in 2023, but changed her mind two days later when she brought her husband to the hospital for a check-up. Throughout her career, Doğumsel played a significant role in over 3,000 births.

MARRIED TO THE MAN BORN IN HER MOTHER'S HAND 31 YEARS AGO

Last year, Nilüfer Doğumsel's daughter, 29-year-old Dilara, informed her family that her boyfriend, 31-year-old Gökhan Güngör, would come to ask for her hand in marriage. During the engagement ceremony that took place shortly after, the groom's mother, 67-year-old Seviye Kızılırmak, realized that she recognized Nilüfer Doğumsel from somewhere. Later, Seviye Kızılırmak remembered that Nilüfer Doğumsel was the midwife present at the birth of her son, Gökhan Güngör. It turned out to be an interesting coincidence that 31-year-old Gökhan Güngör was born in the hands of Nilüfer Doğumsel, who is now his mother-in-law. Dilara Güngör has been married to Gökhan Güngör, who was born in her mother's hands 31 years ago, for about a year.

"I DELIVERED MY SON-IN-LAW"

Regarding the matter, Nilüfer Doğumsel said, "I am working in my 40th year in the profession. I have experienced many events in my working life, and we have beautiful memories. One of them was this; we married my daughter this summer and had her wedding. Of course, there was a meeting with the in-laws before the wedding. During the introduction, the groom's mother immediately remembered me and said, 'You became both the midwife and the stepmother of your son-in-law.' I asked how that was possible, and it turned out that I had delivered my son-in-law. The lady, bless her, has not forgotten me for 30 years, and she reminded me in this way. Of course, it is not possible for me to remember each one because I have been involved in over 3,000 births, but the mothers who give birth definitely remember their midwives. When we learned this, we were both very happy and very surprised; something you never thought about for years has happened to you. We said this is quite a coincidence, and it has remained a beautiful memory for us. Now I am both the midwife mother of my son-in-law and the stepmother, but he generally calls me midwife mother," she said.

RETURNED FROM HER DECISION DESPITE SUBMITTING A RESIGNATION

On the other hand, Nilüfer Doğumsel also spoke about her love for the profession, saying:

"Two years ago, there was a lot of pressure from home and the children to 'retire,' so I submitted my resignation, and it was approved. But during that time, I got very bored at home and thought that I had submitted my resignation at an untimely moment. My husband was also coming here for physical therapy at that time. I made the decision at night, and in the morning, I put on my uniform and came here. There was only about a week left until I was supposed to sign for retirement. My husband and I came in the morning, and of course, he didn't ask me anything, thinking he must have work to do. I went and talked to my managers, and they were very happy; since I was already in my uniform, I started again. My husband called and said, 'Come on, we are going,' and I said, 'You go, I am staying; I have returned to work.' He got a bit angry but then started to laugh, and in the end, he said, 'Do whatever you want; you can't be managed.' I have always had a comfortable working life. I have never had problems with administrators, and my communication with patients has always been very good. I am working in my 40th year, and if I were to be born again, I would still work as a midwife; I love my profession so much."
