After the Falyalı murder, Önal was wanted as a "suspect," but it was determined that he had fled abroad. Önal, who was caught in the Netherlands in December 2023, was not extradited to Turkey and began to be tried in the Netherlands. He was released after giving a 120-page statement to Dutch and US intelligence.
Önal claimed that he had no connection to the Falyalı murder.
