The high inflation seen in Turkey is causing millions of citizens to experience difficulties in making ends meet and the rate of persistent poverty to increase more each year. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) stated in its report on 'Poverty and Living Conditions Statistics' shared today that the rate of persistent poverty has increased by 0.7 points to 13.7%. TURKEY'S POOREST PROVINCESThe most striking part of the report was the poorest cities in Turkey. The report indicated that the regions with the highest relative poverty rate based on income were Kırıkkale, Aksaray, Niğde, Nevşehir, and Kırşehir, with a rate of 14.6%. In the report published last year, the poorest cities in Turkey were the TR82 region, which includes Kastamonu, Çankırı, and Sinop. PROVINCES WITH THE LEAST POVERTYThe report also included the cities with the lowest poverty rates. The regions with the lowest relative poverty rate were TRC1 (Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Kilis) with 4.7% and TRC2 (Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır) with 6.4%. 31.3% OF THE POPULATION EXPERIENCES LEAKY ROOFS, DAMP WALLS, AND ROTTEN WINDOW FRAME PROBLEMSWhile 31.3% of the non-institutional population experiences problems such as leaky roofs, damp walls, and rotten window frames, 30.2% face heating issues due to insulation in their homes, and 21.7% encounter air pollution, environmental pollution, or other environmental issues caused by traffic or industry. THE RATE OF THOSE WITH INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS OR DEBTS WAS 56.8%Compared to last year, the rate of those with debts or installment payments, excluding housing purchases and housing expenses, decreased by 1.2 points to 56.8%. While 5.2% of the population did not find these payments burdensome, 39.1% found them somewhat burdensome, and 12.5% found them very burdensome. The proportion of households for which housing expenses were very burdensome decreased by 3.9 points to 13.6%, while the proportion of households for which these expenses were somewhat burdensome increased by 4.7 points to 71.2%. The proportion of households stating that housing expenses did not burden them was calculated as 15.2%, a decrease of 0.7 points compared to last year. 57.5% of individuals stated that they could not economically afford a week's vacation away from home, 39.3% could not afford meals containing meat, chicken, or fish every other day, 26.8% could not cover unexpected expenses, 15.1% could not meet their heating needs, and 59.6% could not afford to renew old furniture. THE RATE OF THOSE LIVING IN THEIR OWN HOMES WAS 56.1%The proportion of those owning the house they live in decreased by 0.1 points compared to last year, calculated as 56.1% in 2024, while the proportion of those living in rented accommodation was 28.0%, those living in dormitories was 0.9%, and those not living in their own homes but not paying rent was 15.0%.
