Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yaman from the Department of Pulmonary Diseases at Biruni University Medical Faculty Hospital warned, "The freezing cold that has affected the country can particularly trigger chronic diseases such as asthma and COPD, leading to respiratory difficulties. When the cold wave combines with air pollution in large cities, it can pose serious threats to health."

Turkey is under the influence of a cold air wave originating from Siberia, while experts emphasize that these cold weathers pose serious health risks for individuals with lung diseases. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Yaman from the Department of Pulmonary Diseases at Biruni University Medical Faculty Hospital stated that cold weather can narrow the airways, making it difficult to take in oxygen. Yaman pointed out that this situation could lead to increased asthma attacks, bronchospasms, and severity of cough, and he highlighted that the cold air wave combined with air pollution in large cities poses serious threats to health.

BREATHING IS NARROWING, OXYGEN IS DECREASING

Prof. Dr. Yaman mentioned that cold weather creates negative effects on general health by making it difficult for the body to take in oxygen. Narrowing and spasms in the airways can make it difficult for patients to breathe, negatively affecting their quality of life.

RECOMMENDATION FOR WARM CLOTHING AND MASK USE

Prof. Dr. Yaman recommended that individuals with lung diseases wear warm clothing and mouth-nose protective masks before going outside. He advised avoiding prolonged exposure to the outdoors in cold weather and not being suddenly exposed to cold air. He also added that individuals with lung diseases should regularly use their medications and avoid excessive physical activity.

EARLY INTERVENTION IS CRUCIAL

Prof. Dr. Yaman emphasized that in case of symptoms such as increased cough, sputum production, or shortness of breath due to cold weather, one should consult a pulmonary disease specialist without delay, stating that early intervention is of great importance in preventing health complications. He stressed that cold weather can have serious effects on lung diseases and that early diagnosis can prevent complications. Prof. Dr. Yaman noted that risks increase with cold weather, but these risks can be managed with simple precautions. He reiterated that individuals with lung diseases should be particularly careful in cold weather to protect their health.
