The aftermath of the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, yesterday, which prompted tsunami warnings, is beginning to take shape.
AT LEAST 30 INJURED
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated in a press conference today that at least 30 injuries and 1 residential fire occurred due to the earthquake.

Takaichi urged residents in the affected areas to follow information and warnings from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and local authorities for one week, stating, "While continuing your normal socio-economic activities, maintain daily earthquake preparedness such as identifying safe evacuation areas and routes, and securing furniture that may tip over, and be ready for evacuation in case of a possible tremor."
"THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF AN EARTHQUAKE OF 8 OR GREATER"
Japan's Disaster Management Director Tsukasa Morikubo warned that the 7.5 magnitude earthquake recorded last night could pave the way for larger tremors. Morikubo stated, "According to earthquake statistics recorded worldwide so far, there is a possibility of an earthquake of 8 or greater occurring in the Japan Trench and Chishima Trench off the coast of Hokkaido following the earthquake that occurred late Monday night." He emphasized that it is still uncertain whether an earthquake of this magnitude will occur, but "everyone should heed calls to take precautions to protect themselves."
TSUNAMI WARNING LIFTED
Following the earthquake, the tsunami warning issued for Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures was lifted in the early hours of the morning, although tsunami waves reaching heights of 70 centimeters were observed in some coastal areas.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Japan was shaken yesterday by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter off the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced that the tremor was recorded at a depth of 50 kilometers at 23:15 local time. Initially reported as 7.6 in magnitude, it was later updated to 7.5. The earthquake was felt strongly not only in Aomori but also in Iwate, Hokkaido, Miyagi, and Akita prefectures. The tremor caused brief panic in the capital Tokyo and its surroundings.
After the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures, with officials stating that tsunami waves could reach heights of 3 meters. Authorities urged residents living in coastal areas to move to higher ground or the upper floors of buildings.
