Brigadier General Yossi Shariel, who is in charge of Unit 8200 responsible for collecting cyber and digital intelligence and code decryption in Israel, has resigned citing the 'failure' in response to the attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023.

The news of Brigadier General Shariel's resignation was reported to have been conveyed to Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi and Military Intelligence Directorate (AMAN) Chief Brigadier General Shlomi Binder, according to the Israeli state television channel KAN. In the resignation letter published by the Israeli army radio, he used the expression "I failed in my duty at 06:29 on October 7th."

NOT THE FIRST RESIGNATION

According to KAN's report, the Israeli Army Spokesperson's Office stated that Shariel, the head of Unit 8200, informed his commanders and subordinates today that he wants to retire, and that he will leave his post in the near future. Shariel, who took over as the head of Unit 8200 responsible for cyber intelligence in Israel in 2021, is not the first to resign in relation to the October 7th attacks in the Israeli military intelligence command. Major General Aharon Haliva, the Chief of the Military Intelligence Directorate, also resigned on April 22nd, citing October 7th, 2023 as the reason.

"I FAILED TO ACCOMPLISH MY MISSION"

Haliva, who decided to resign due to the failure in the October 7th attacks around Gaza, used the expression "The intelligence unit under my command failed to accomplish its mission. I will carry the pain of the war forever. I now want to accept responsibility and end my duty." in his resignation letter.
