A bus driver falling asleep at the wheel in Bursa caused an accident that shattered the life of 17-year-old high school student Eymen Gökçe, who was trapped between two vehicles and severely injured. The young boy underwent 8 surgeries during nearly two years of treatment, losing both his health and education. While the family rebelled against the expert report's statement that "the driver didn't sleep, he just momentarily closed his eyes," the victim appealed to Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, saying, "I need support."
In the accident that occurred when a bus driver fell asleep at the wheel on Atatürk Avenue in the Osmangazi district of Bursa and crashed into the vehicle in front, 17-year-old high school student Eymen Gökçe was seriously injured after being trapped between the two vehicles. While the horrific moment of the accident was captured second by second on security cameras, the nearly two-year treatment process of the young student turned his life upside down.
HE WAS BEDRIDDEN FOR 6 MONTHS, UNDERWENT 8 SURGERIES
It was learned that Eymen Gökçe, who was seriously injured in the accident, was bedridden for the first 6 months and underwent 8 surgeries. After a treatment process lasting approximately 16 months, it was reported that the high school student developed a 3-centimeter shortening in his leg. Due to his health issues, Gökçe was unable to attend school and had to repeat a grade.
HEALTH REPORT OUTRAGED THE FAMILY
One of the main issues that angered the family was the health reports prepared. The determination of a 19% disability rate for the young man, who received treatment for about 16 months and was bedridden for months, along with a report indicating he only needed a caregiver for 1 month, caused the family to rebel.
"HE DIDN'T SLEEP, JUST HAD A MOMENTARY EYE CLOSURE"
Meanwhile, in the expert report, it was assessed that the driver "did not sleep but experienced a momentary eye closure," while it was noted that the camera footage of the accident clearly showed the driver falling asleep at the wheel.
It was learned that the bus driver, who was fired after the accident, filed a lawsuit to return to work and won the case.
EYMEN CALLED OUT TO JUSTICE MINISTER AKIN GÜRLEK
Describing his ordeal, Eymen Gökçe said, "I received treatment for nearly 2 years. I couldn't go to school and was separated from my friends. I had to repeat a grade. I was in a very bad psychological state. I'm trying to recover a bit now. My only wish is for this case to be thoroughly investigated. I also expect support from our Justice Minister Akın Gürlek."
"I WANT THE CASE FILE TO BE EXAMINED IN DETAIL"
Father Nazife Gökçe, reacting to their ordeal, said, "My son has been receiving treatment for 2 years. In the accident caused by a person falling asleep at the wheel, the expert commented that he 'closed his eyes for 1 second.' The footage is clear; the man was clearly out of it. I want this case file to be examined in detail. My son was dependent on care for a year, but the report only states he needed care for 1 month. We want justice to be served. This person also filed a lawsuit to return to work and won it. Thank God Burulaş is not accepting him, but how did this person win the case? I don't understand. We suffered economic hardship for months," he said.
