"I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE"

Describing the incident, Günay Kılıç said, "Yesterday, I fertilized the field with my nephews. We applied urea to the field, and on the way back, I thought a tree had fallen on our land in the Hacıkayyum region. As I got closer, I realized it wasn't a tree. I noticed it was a snake lying stretched out. After getting closer, I got out of the car and looked. The snake started to move. Then it began to climb the tree. I have never seen a snake this big. I am someone who constantly works with soil. I have seen many snakes before, but I have never seen anything like this. There is no such terrifying snake. It had a way of climbing a tree; I couldn't understand what kind of animal it was. It climbed the tree and stretched out along the tree. It can be seen in the video I took. It is also a very thick snake. I was shocked when I saw it. It didn't occur to me to take a picture with my phone. My nephew was behind my vehicle; he recorded the video. I was already scared; I was shocked," he said.

AN IMPORTANT CREATURE FOR THE REGION

Commonly known as 'Bozyörük', the Hazer snake is one of the largest snakes in Europe. This species is not venomous and usually hunts during the day. The Hazer snake prefers habitats such as roadside areas, open slopes, valley slopes, rocky riverbanks, swamps, sparse shrublands, grassy open areas, as well as gardens and cemeteries. It can be seen in the mountains at altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 1,600 meters above sea level. In terms of feeding habits, they consume small mammals, birds according to their size, bird chicks, lizards, and sometimes smaller species of snakes as food sources. Although the Hazer snake is not venomous, it is considered wild; it bites quickly and without warning. They play an important role in natural pest control as they also consume rodents and other species known as agricultural pests.
