On the day of the incident, Hatice Çevik, the mother of Habibe Çevik, who was at home, stated in her testimony to the police at that time that her former son-in-law Göksel Sağlam committed the murders in front of his grandchildren. Çevik explained that Sağlam came to the house and called his daughter Habibe Çevik outside, but her daughter did not come down, saying, "I have nothing to talk to you about." Çevik noted that Göksel Sağlam, who got angry at this situation, entered the building and leaned against the apartment door, and that Habibe Çevik's children were scared and hid in a room. It was revealed that Sağlam, who was on leave from Menemen Open Prison where he was serving a sentence for another crime, followed Habibe Çevik and committed the murders on the last day of his leave. After the incident, it was reported that Sağlam, who was arrested, escaped shortly after.
