The "Oksigono" and "İlektra" boats, which will join the Global Sumud Flotilla departing from Greece to break the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza and to show solidarity with Palestine, set sail from the port on Siroz Island.
HUNDREDS GATHERED AT THE PORT
Support events were organized throughout the island during the day, and hundreds of people gathered at the port to boost the morale of the crew. As the ships moved, the crowd filling the port chanted slogans such as "Freedom for Gaza," "Resistance will win," and "Down with Israel" while waving Palestinian flags.
'THE SYMBOL OF HOPE' DOLPHINS ALSO ACCOMPANIED
On the other hand, the boats that set sail encountered an unexpected surprise. Dolphins, known globally as the 'symbol of hope,' also accompanied them. The dolphins not only accompanied the boats but also moved as if guiding them.
OBJECTIVE: TO MOBILIZE THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY
The officials of "March to Gaza Greece" emphasized that the purpose of the Greek ships is to break the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza, to mobilize the international community, and to contribute to the establishment of a safe corridor for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza. It was stated that the flotilla sends a strong message of solidarity to the world public by drawing attention to the humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
GLOBAL SUMUD FLOTILLA
The boats belonging to the international civil aid flotilla named Global Sumud Flotilla, created with the support of about 50 countries to show solidarity with Palestine and to break the blockade imposed by Israel, set sail from Barcelona, Spain, towards Gaza on August 31.
The boats that set sail from Spain began to reach Tunisia on September 7. The Global Sumud Flotilla in Tunisia was targeted by drone attacks on the nights of September 8 and 9. In the past, Israel intervened in ships trying to go to Gaza one by one, seizing the boats and deporting the activists. The Global Sumud Flotilla is the largest flotilla to set sail towards Gaza so far.
Sumud, which means "steadfastness" or "unyielding determination" in Arabic, has become a term that describes the oppression and resistance among the Palestinian people after the Six-Day War in 1967. The concept of Sumud expresses the search for ways to resist occupation and build alternative institutions through remaining on their land, keeping Palestinian identity and culture alive, and non-violent civil disobedience. In Palestine, the olive tree and a pregnant peasant woman are used to depict this concept.
