The "Murana" buffalo breed, developed in Turkey after 30 years of work, has made a significant breakthrough in livestock farming by increasing milk yield to 2,000 liters while maintaining fat quality.

As a result of approximately 30 years of work by the Bandırma Sheep Breeding Research Institute, a new type of buffalo was developed by crossing the Anatolian buffalo with the high-yield Murrah breed from India. The milk yield of these hybrids, named "Murana," has reached an annual total of 2,000 liters.

MAJOR LEAP IN MILK YIELD

In a project carried out under the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM) affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the annual milk yield of the traditional Anatolian buffalo, which was 800-900 liters, was significantly increased. As a result of the crossbreeding studies, this amount was raised to an average of 2,000 liters.

FAT RATE MAINTAINED, YIELD INCREASED

Kerim Kılınç, the director of the Bandırma Sheep Breeding Research Institute, emphasized that not only the increase in yield but also the quality of the milk was preserved in the studies. Kılınç stated, "While achieving this increase, we also maintained the milk fat ratio. We obtained buffaloes that produce both fatty and high-yield milk."

TO BE NAMED "MURANA"

Kılınç noted that the new breed resulting from the crossbreeding of the Anatolian buffalo and the Murrah breed is planned to be named "Murana," and he expressed that the breed development studies have been ongoing for many years.

WILL CONTRIBUTE TO LIVESTOCK AND THE ECONOMY

Kılınç emphasized that buffalo farming is an important source of livelihood, especially for local producers, and stated that the newly developed breed will increase both production and efficiency. It was also noted that the number of buffaloes has been on the rise again in recent years with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The newly developed "Murana" buffaloes are expected to elevate Turkey to a stronger position in international buffalo milk production.
